Let's start with the size. Current phones are just way too big. If I can't reach the top left corner with my thumb without shifting my grip, it's too big. Period. As per the provenance of the phone, Chinese manufacturers are a red flag for me. It's not paranoia, but every chinese company is legally required to hand over all information about their users to the chinese government: 🤍 I used Samsung phones for a long while. I started on the Galaxy S8, then I had an S9+, an S10e, then an S21. I ran the default Samsung ROM on some of these, and I find Samsung phones great. I even miss the curved edges screen. My problem with Samsung is more in terms of reliability. All phones I owned from them had the exact same issue: after about a year, they stop recognizing my SIM card. This happened to EVERY Samsung phone I ever owned, so I'm done with them. So that leaves Google, the Pixels are highly rated by people who use them. But first, and it's subjective, I find them horrendous to look at. Plus, they're very unreliable. The first gen had severe performance degradation, the second one had a bad OLED screen that burned in way too quickly, and an easy to break USB C connector. The third pixels were plagued by software issues. The fourth pixels had a bad screen again, and a very insecure face unlock mechanism. The fifth pixels seemed to have huge manufacturing issues with the screen separating from the main body, and almost right after launch as well. The 6th one has issues with the fingerprint sensor not working well, the assistant could ghost dial random contacts, there was a screen flicker issue, so basically no quality control on that phone. And as per the pixel 7, it looks like the camera glass is spontaneously cracking. I'm sure I could look hard and long enough and find something that I'd enjoy, but Android is just messy. Samsung's brand of Android, called oneUI was pretty good, with a great design flair, easy to use with one hand, with major controls at the bottom of the screen, good gesture navigation, and looks wise, it was pretty good. BUT it's riddled with ads in a lot of the default applications, and it's a mess of applications you can't remove. It's bloatware central. If you go with Vanilla Android from Google, then you get something that is way more trimmed down, with only Google apps and services, but the design is horrible, in my opinion. Which leads us to alternate ROMS. Graphene OS works on Pixels, and as I explained, no way I'm buying one, not with that track record. Then there's Lineage, or /e/, my favorite one, which goes even further than Lineage in terms of removing Google crap, and has a very nice simple aesthetic that I find super pleasing. /e/ is what I would use, if I could find a phone I like to use it on. My Galaxy S21 is in a drawer, and I'd love to use that with /e/. But I can't, because they don't support it.

Waydroid is based on LineageOS, based on Android 10, and can access any needed hardware. It can run Android apps on x86 or ARM cpus, it's fully open source, it can add your Android apps to your menu, it can display apps in their own windows or fullscreen, it can display the Android Ui for navigation, and has near native performance. Waydroid lets you install .APK applications, which you can download online relatively easily, but to begin with, you might want to get an app store, which will make this process a lot simpler. Let's go with F Droid, which has tons of open source applications for Android, that will also work on Waydroid. waydroid app install and then the path to your APK file, and hit enter. You'll then have to restart the system service for Waydroid, using sudo sysctemctl start waydroid-container Your app should now be added to your applications menu, and you can open it through there. From F-Droid, you can install any application you want, and they'll also get automatically added to your applications menu. Of course, at first install, you'll need to enable installing applications from an untrusted source, like on a "real" android device. You can also add the Google Apps and the Play Services. I left a link to the install instructions, it's not an easy, one click install by any means, and you'll have to run multiple command lines, install a few packages on your distro, register your "fake device" with Google, clear the Play Store cache, install magisk and more. Once that's done, though, you do get a fully functional Android system, complete with Google apps, and the Google Play Store. You can login with your Google account, and use Waydroid as a full Android system. App apps that require the Google Play Services will also work, including youtube, Google Maps, Gmail, and a lot more. You'll also be able to download apps you might already have purchased in the Play Store on an Android device, if you so choose. I couldn't find certain apps in the Play Store, though, like Netflix for example, which might be a country-related issue. Some apps would also crash at startup, like Amazon prime Video. Xbox Game Pass worked, I could navigate the UI and launch a game with Xcloud, but after that, games would just not display anything, sticking to a black window, which I had to quit to resume using Waydroid. My banking app also failed with an error message telling me the service wasn't available. Twitter worked perfectly, Duolingo also did, although in Portrait mode.

They offer users what they call Murena cloud, Murena being the global brand that regroups the OS, the services, and the smartphones they sell. The Murena team was nice enough to send me a FairPhone 4 as a review unit, running /e/ OS 1.0. The launcher is still a grid of apps, very iOS like, without an app drawer. Advanced privacy is a feature that lets you hide your IP address, provide a fake location, and denies all trackers. It will show you a graph of all blocked trackers, and you can manage these per app. Instead of the Google Play Store, you get the App Lounge. It allows you to login anonymously, or using a Google Account, to let you buy paid apps. I downloaded a bunch of apps, including my banking app, Twitter, Firefox, Youtube, Game Pass, Freeletics, or Youtube music, and they all worked flawlessly, as you'd expect. The App Lounge still retains its privacy ratings, giving a score out of 10 for each app, powered by Exodus Privacy. In terms of internals, /e/ OS is still based on Lineage 18.1, so it's on Android 11, but it does have all the latest security patches, and gets updated regularly. I'm less excited about the FairPhone 4. While is absolutely love the mission behind this phone, it doesn't feel like a device that suits my needs. First, it's pretty heavy, at 228 grams. But it doesn't have high refresh rate, and after using a phone and a tablet, and a PC screen that run at least at 100hz, the return to 60hz is brutal It uses a snapdragon 750G with 5G support, it has 6 to 8GB of RAM depending on the storage, either 128GB or 256GB. The battery is 3900 mAh, and definitely lasts the whole day without any problems. The cameras are pretty good, with dual 48MP on the back at F1.6 and F2.2 aperture, so you get a wide angle, and the selfie camera is 25MP at F2.2, with a small notch. The phone itself comes in grey, green, or speckled green, I got the gray variant, and you can add a charger and cable optionally, if you don't already have them. The price is pretty high too for these specs, at 579€, but that's the price you pay for a sustainable phone with a huge warranty and repairability. You also get a fingerprint reader What if you don't want a fairphone but you like /e/ OS? Well, you can do that as well, after all I used it on a galaxy S8+ before. They have 3 ways to get /e/ OS. First, you have their online store, where they offer a variety of devices, including the Fairphone 3 and 4, Galaxy S nines and S nines +. Second, you can use their Easy Installer. Third, if your device isn't supported by the easy installer, you can just flash /e/ OS on a LOT of phones.

One of the most well known is Lineage OS, which builds on top of the Android open source project, or AOSP, supports a LOT of devices, and is open source, of course. Another interesting one if you want to fully escape Google's ecosystem is Graphene OS. The drawback of Graphene OS is that it only supports Google Pixels. Techlore video about Graphene: 🤍 And yet another one that I personally really love is /e/ OS, and despite its terrible name, it is even more de googled than Graphene OS. Android allows alternative app stores, and if you're looking for FOSS apps, your best best is F Droid. 🤍 Let's start with mail clients. And the obvious one here is K9 Mail. It does basically everything you'd expect a mail client to do, with IMAP support, dark mode, unified inbox if you have multiple email accounts, per mail account notifications, email signatures, email encryption with openPGP, push notifications, and it also doesn't track anything you do, write, or send. For web browsers, it's pretty easy. You don't even need F Droid to install open source browsers and replace the default one. Most Android ROMS that manufacturers ship use either Google Chrome, or their own web browser based on CHromium, but they're generally not open source. For launchers, you have Lawnchair. It's basically a copy of the pixel launcher, but you'll have to install it from their website, as the version on F Droid is old, like the one in the play store. 🤍 Another option is O Launcher, if you want a really super minimalistic launcher, with only a few links to most used apps, a daily wallpaper, and a list of apps that only appear by name. You can choose how many apps appear on the homescreen, which apps are opened by a swipe left or right, and that's about it! For taking pictures, you basically have 2 really good options. If you just want to snap quick pictures and videos, and you don't care about the settings, the resolution, the framerate or any of that stuff, then SImpleCamera is for you. If you like tweaking every single setting before taking a picture, though, you need OpenCamera. And, to preview these images, your best option is probably Simple Gallery. It has albums, search, and a bunch of options to include or exclude folders, handle full screen previews, and it lets you star, share, delete, and edit pictures, with a lot of options to rotate, crop, invert, or apply filters, and you can save the modified image as a new one. Also, you might have noticed that these "Simple Apps" look alike, and that's because they're all part of the same collection made by the same dev team: 🤍 As per map applications, your 2 best open source bets are OSMAnd, for OpenStreetMap Automated Navigation Directions, and OSMAnd has travel maps, offline navigation for cars, cycling or walking, and relief maps. It obviously uses open street map. does virtually the exact same thing as OSMAnd, and also uses open street map, but adds travel guides to show you interesting places to see or visit, and I find its interface looks a bit nicer than OSMAnd.

Linux Phone vs. De-Googled Android AOSP - Which is better for Privacy?

There are two options to get some privacy when using mobile phones. These are Linux Phones and AOSP (De-Googled) Phones. Which are better? These two types of devices operate on different privacy principles and this video gets into how one type of device deals with data exclusion while the other approach deals with data disinformation. Linux Phones can be Ubuntu Touch (Nexus 5, Oneplus One), Pinephone (Ubuntu Touch, Debian/Phosh, Nemo/Sailfish, etc.), Librem 5 (Phosh, Ubuntu Touch) and many new ones coming out soon. AOSP (De-googled) include LineageOS with No GAPPS, /e/ Foundation. GrapheneOS, and my own BraxROM. These are all fine. They just use different devices. All have no Google on them and are built in a similar way. Some of these are available on my store so check the link below.
