Two years ago, I made an ecosystem pond for my parents using a kit. That pond was fine, but it was quite small. Especially once they got goldfish. Even then, I knew I wanted to redo the entire thing to go larger. This time, I took a DIY approach in hopes to create a beautiful pond on a budget. All things considered, I believe I did exactly that. Even so, there are additional ways to save as I explain in the video. Anyway, join me as begin Pond Season 2023! This video shows how i built a natural looking fish pond in my backyard for native fish. It has a DIY skimmer, biological filter and stream. The fish are Southern pygmy perch and Murray river rainbow fish. These fish are native to South-East Australia. I was quoted between 10 and 16 thousand dollars. I couldn't afford that so i built it myself for just over $2000. This is Australian dollars, everything is a little more expensive here. To learn more about building and maintaining a successful backyard fish pond visit 🤍 I think this is everything you need to build yourself a pond like this. Most of these links will be amazon links as a member of their affiliate program if you do make a purchase i will receive a commission. This costs you no extra. You can also just use the links to help see what the components look like or roughly how much they cost. Geo textile underlayment- 🤍 (X2 if you want to sandwich the liner between to layers). Firestone EPDM Rubber liner- 🤍 Used Olive barrel for the Bog filter- 🤍 (this is an Australian company but you'll find these types of containers second hand anywhere in the world.) Helpful video showing how the bog filter is constructed- 🤍 Uniseals to create watertight holes in the barrel. You need 2 one for the clean out and one for the overflow. - 🤍 2" PVC pipe for overflow and clean out- 🤍 2" PVC Ball valve for clean out.- 🤍 2" PVC 90 degree elbow- 🤍 (attach to the overflow so water in directed down instead of jetting out into the stream. You might also like to get another to help lift water off the very bottom on the clean out pipe.) PVC Glue- 🤍 Flexible 1 1/4" PVC pipe. - 🤍 ( To move water from the pump to the filter) 25ft should be enough but it will depend on where you position the skimmer in relation to the bog filter. 1 1/4" PVC 90 degree Elbow X 2- 🤍 To help connect pump to the flex pvc and filter barrel. 1 1/4" PVC pipe rigid- 🤍 (this is cut to the length required of the barrel. This is the pipe that runs from top to bottom inside the bog filter barrel) 1 1/4" PVC t piece fittings- 🤍 (To help disperse the water at the base of the filter.) Bucket to create skimmer- 🤍 (Doest matter what type of bucket or container as long as it can fit the pump you choose) Submersible pond pump Low volt DC- 🤍 (This is a different pump to what i used in this pond, however i used 4 of these pumps on my dream pond build and have been really happy) The transformers need to be kept indoors or protected from weather. They can easily be extended if need be. This video will help if you need to extend the low volt DC cable- 🤍 If you wish to find another alternative anything that delivers around 1000- 1200 gallons per hour will work fine. Matala filter mat- 🤍 (Cut to size to sit over the pump in the bucket) Waterfall foam- 🤍 (To seal cracks and crevices when creating the stream. Can also be used to seal gaps in the rocks used to create the skimmer) Pond flocculent- 🤍 (To clear up muddy or cloudy water) Beneficial bacteria- 🤍 (Beneficial bacteria to kick start the ecosystem) I think that's it for all the plumbing, pumps , underlayment and liner. The pond build is finally here! I've been talking about this for months and thought that it would have been done about a month ago, but the whole thing is just so time consuming, especially with the weather we've been having. Like I said in the video, this has been going on since October of 2018 and was just a concept long before that. The whole reason that I even built this is for my goldfish, so stocking in non-negotiable... other than more goldfish lol (4 won't be enough). This is only the first part of a few video series and I hope it gives you a good idea as to what's possible outside the realm of naturalistic ponds. Obviously that's what we all want, but sometimes it's just not feasible because of cost. Even though it's not the same type of thing, these kind of ponds can still be beautiful in their own sort of way. Plus you can create a good home for your beloved fish, which is often what it's all about. There's so much more I could say, but the video should be able to do most of the talking. Also a huge thanks for Oase for supplying the pumps! It was a huge burden off of me and was really appreciated. Please read the following: Using a wheelie bin/ trash can to make a pond filter is a bit of a debated topic, some people say the plastics used to make them are toxic and harmful to fish. From my research I have not found any evidence to support this, I have however seen a lot of people use them with no problems what so ever. However, it is obviously possible that some are made from different types of plastic. Also, most plastic containers (including wheelie bins/ trash cans) will have a symbol on them somewhere (probably under the lid) which you can look up online to check that it’s not made of anything toxic that could be released into the water. That all being said I do urge you to do your own research, and make your own informed decision on if you want to go ahead.

Its about 50 gallons and should be good for smaller common pond fish. We made it look a lot better by doing a little bit of wood working and created a nice cover for the stainless steel tub.
