Most of the cichlids on this list are relatively going to be aggressive most of the time. All cichlids have their own personality though, so even the "aggressive" cichlids in this video can still have a docile individual. Many thanks! Flowerhorn cichlids are ornamental aquarium #fish noted for their vivid colors and the distinctively shaped heads for which they are named. Their head protuberance, or kok, is formally termed a nuchal hump. Like blood parrot #cichlids, they are man-made hybrids that exist in the wild only because of their release. ➤ ORIGIN OF FLOWERHORN ❀ Flowerhorn breeding dates to 1993. Taiwanese and Malaysians admired fish with protruding heads, known as 'kaloi' or 'warships', found in the western part of the nation. ❀ In 1995, the blood parrots were further crossbred with the Human Face Red God of Fortune, which produced a new breed called the Five-colors God of Fortune. With its beautiful colors, this fish quickly became popular. ❀ By 1999, there were four varieties of flowerhorn available in the American market: regular flowerhorns, pearl-scale flowerhorns, golden flowerhorns, and faders. Commercial breeders proliferated, and fish were selected for appearance with little regard for terminology. ❀ Around 2000 to 2001, the Kamfa variety appeared. These were hybrids of any type of flowerhorn crossed with any species of the genus Vieja or with any parrot cichlid. ➤ IN CAPTIVITY Flowerhorn cichlids have a lifespan of 10–12 years. They are usually kept at a water temperature of 80–85 °F, and a pH of 7.4–8.0. They require a tank of a minimum of 40 gallons, with 75 gallons optimal. A breeding pair may require a tank of 150 gallons or more, depending on size. Being aggressive and territorial, two or more flowerhorns are usually not kept together, but the tank housing them can be divided up with acrylic dividers or egg crates. ➤ VARIETIES The four main derived varieties are Zhen Zhu, Golden Monkey, Kamfa, and the golden base group, which includes Faders and the Golden Trimac. They are sometimes referred to as breeds, though that term technically only refers to varieties of fully domesticated species: Thai Silk, King Kamfa, IndoMalau, Tank King, King Kong Parrots and Red Ingots. 40 Types of Cichlids for Your Aquarium - Most Gorgeous Cichlid Fish There are over 1,300 species of cichlids—most of which dwell in Lake Malawi in Africa. But you can find them in other places too, like Madagascar, southern Asia, and even tropical parts of the Americas. They have become popular amongst aquarists because of their incredible personality differences, color variations, and environmental needs. If you’re thinking of adding a cichlid or two, here are 40 species that can work well in your aquarium if you offer the right conditions. Some can be very finicky, aggressive, and otherwise hard to keep. So, make sure your skill set matches their needs before you buy. Let’s see my list. The 40 Types of Cichlids 1. Dogtooth Cichlid 2. In this video I show the full process of building a rock bank aquascape for my African Cichlids! I have a variety of colourful Lake Tanganyikan cichlids that I'm planning to grow out in the tank. These type of fish love hard scapes, as they don't require any plants. The peninsula design of the tank makes it perfect to create a rocky bank up one end for these fish who love to go in and out of the caves.. This scape was a HUGE process as I had to remove the previous riverbank scape that Jason from Australian Biotopes created. Although I absolutely loved that scape, and appreciated what Jason did SO much, I explain in the video the reason why I went for the change. Our Top 10 most peaceful cichlids! We have kept a wide variety of cichlids, and in today's video, we compiled a list of our current favorites when it comes to the less aggressive species. Most of the cichlids on this list are relatively peaceful, and many will do well in community or planted aquariums. All cichlids have their own personality though, so even the "peaceful" cichlids in this video can still have a rogue or aggressive individual. A few tips to reduce risk of aggression with any cichlid: proper tank mates, larger tanks with more territory, ideal Male/Female ratios, and avoiding pairs breeding in the tank.
