Recently I got a call from the local Leica rep. He told me that a package arrived, the new Leica Q3. I jumped into my car immediately, grabbed the camera, and off I went to shoot this unboxing video. I only had the Q3 for the evening, as I was taking off on vacation with Camera Girl the very next day. I returned it the next morning, and I've sat on this video for 2 weeks. Sorry about that. Here's my unboxing and first look at one of the most anticipated updates for Leica fans. The price is $200 USD higher than the previous version, but is the upgrade worth it? I think it is, but it's not just about the sensor or the 8K video. Almost everything has been upgraded or updated except for the amazing lens. The latest in the Q series, the Leica Q3 now features a 60 megapixel, tri-resolution, back-side illuminated CMOS sensor. For the first time in a Leica camera we now have phase detection autofocus. We also have dedicated USB-C ports for charging and data transfer as well as a micro HDMI output for video. The Q3 will shoot up to 8k 30p video in 8 bit 4:2:0 internal or 10 bit 4:2:2 external, 4k 60p 4:2:2 10 bit internal or 1080 120p 4:2:2 internal. Oh, and there’s no audio input. But we do have an upgraded EVF at 5.7 million dots and an upgraded, tillable 3” touch screen. The Leica Q3 is possibly the most anticipated (and most leaked) camera of the year. With an amazing 28mm f/1.7 Summilux lens that is specifically designed for this camera - you can get impressive image quality. The lens features a leaf shutter for high speed flash sync. It also features optical image stabilization, autofocus and a macro switch for extreme close up photography. There is no other fixed lens camera in this class.
