With 55 million articles in more than 300 languages, Wikipedia attracts 1.7 billion visitors every month. The freely editable content project is supported by the Wikimedia Foundation. As of 2020, the foundation employs more than 300 people and has annual revenues of more than $100m. But at a time when truth is under assault like never before, what role does Wikipedia play in the media ecosystem? What steps is it taking to counter misinformation? And when it comes to hate speech online - should technology giants and social media platforms be the ones to moderate that? Wikimedia foundation which manages Wikipedia and Wikipedia, sent a letter to Sri Ravishankar Prasad regarding the Intermediary Liability Rules amendment. In the letter, the General Counsel of Wikimedia Foundation Amanda Keton mentioned why the amendments in the said rules are dangerous to the FoE and internet intermediaries in general. A nonprofit organization, the Wikimedia Foundation is dedicated to fostering the “growth, development, and distribution of free, multilingual content.” Headquartered in San Francisco, California, the organization comprises a team of over 500 contractors and staff who work in fields such as business development, computer & IT, editing, entertainment & media, and software development, among others. The organization is a supporter of flexible work and has hired for full-time, hybrid to 100% remote jobs with flexible schedules in the past. Some of these roles enable the ability to work from anywhere. The involvement of Africans in various Wikimedia Movement initiatives and affiliates has grown exponentially during the pandemic. But with reduced opportunities to meet in-person, many Wikimedians are not aware of the state of the general community but also what initiatives have been undertaken to enhance the opportunities available. During this session, we plan to provide an insight on the state of Wikimedia in Africa (community numbers & data, affiliates data, possible reasons as to why the situation is the way it is, which projects are leading etc); recent technological developments in the Wikimedia Movement and the effect they may have on African participation now and in the future. This will be in addition to addressing the developments around plans of select departments of the Wikimedia Foundation to understand what are the ideas for Africa in the next year.
